We are major exporters of tiger nuts from Nigeria. Tiger nut is largely grown in the northern part of Nigeria. It is always in constant supply all year round. Tiger nut (cyperus esculentus) has always been mistaken for a nut but in reality, it is a tube and is very rich in fiber, natural sugars and protein. They are annual (also perennial) plants that grow up to 90 cm and are best cultivated in sandy soil and a mild climate. Tiger nuts are cultivated from April through to September and harvested in November/December. Like rice, they require irrigation on a weekly basis and are pollinated by wind. Tiger nuts are largely grown in Spain, Mali, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Ghana. They are in high demand in Italy, Russia and the United States. For exports, they must be dry, vented, and free of dirt and are usually packaged like rice in 50 kg sacs.
